Beyond Your Comfort Zone: Where Real Growth Happens
Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, and while change can feel uncomfortable, it's the very path to new discoveries. I've always approached life with a growth mindset, and putting myself "out there" for a new job, pitching creative ideas, taking on home improvement projects that I have little to no experience doing can feel scary or a bit wobbly. Yet, it's these moments that allow me to grow and expand. A process that allows all of us to become better, more capable people.
When the Unknown Calls
The unknown is scary because we are creatures of habit. We like being comfortable, and stepping into new territory can leave us feeling exposed and vulnerable. This is where impostor syndrome loves to make an appearance, whispering doubts and derailing us from taking that leap of faith. It's that little voice that fears we'll be "found out"—when in reality, it's just chatter in our heads.
So, how do you muster the courage to try new things? What helps you tip over the edge of doubt and free-fall into the unknown? For me, the journey begins within.
My Blueprint for a Leap of Faith
First, I start by reconnecting with myself and getting my nervous system into a more coherent state. This is where those "go-to" activities I mentioned in my last blog post come in handy. Once I feel grounded, I then move to doing my homework. I research the situation, whether it’s a new project or a difficult conversation. I learned a lot about the power of preparation during my time in public affairs, working with reporters and getting ready for the unexpected questions and situations.
Next, I act.` I implement the research and legwork, and while my heart may still race a little or my legs feel a bit wobbly, I can stand confidently in my work. I know that I did the best I could, and the rest is outside of my control.
At some point, you simply have to take that leap. And while it can be nerve-wracking, it's also exhilarating. Often, when I push myself beyond my comfort zone, I surprise myself and discover I'm capable of so much more.
The Power of Self-Belief
I share this with you as a reminder that we must have faith in ourselves to truly grow. And if you have people in your life who stand by you and encourage you to take that leap, be thankful for them. While things may not work out exactly as we want them to 100% of the time, I've often found that in retrospect, whatever happened was exactly what needed to happen.
We all have the privilege to experience this life, and I hope you give yourself permission to go after that next accomplishment, relationship, or experience, regardless of how things turn out. After all, how will you ever know if you don’t try?
