The Science of "Being," Why Your Fix-It Mode is Draining Your Energy

How high-achievers can use heart coherence to hit the reset button on burnout.

If you are a driven, A-type professional, most of your life has likely been built on a single, celebrated premise: Doing.

Our culture rewards the "doers." We are praised for our hustle, our ability to fix complex problems, and our capacity to carry a heavy load. But if you are reading this, you probably already know the dark side of that equation. Operating entirely from a place of constant "doing" leads to a fractured, exhausted state of burnout.

When we are exhausted, holistic advice like "just practice being present" can feel incredibly frustrating. To a problem-solver, "being" sounds passive. It sounds like doing nothing.

But what if "being" isn't passive at all? What if I told you that it is a highly active, scientifically measurable state that dictates how much energy you have, how clearly you think, and what kind of opportunities you attract? Interested? Read on…..

The Invisible Power of Your Heart

To understand why "being" is so powerful, we must look at the science of the human body.

Many people don't realize that we literally produce energy outside of our physical bodies. Somewhere between 2-5 feet! The heart has its own electromagnetic field, which is far stronger than the brain's. This field radiates outward, interacting with the world and the people around you.

When we are constantly stressed, rushing, or operating in "fix-it" mode, that energetic field becomes chaotic and erratic. The HeartMath Institute calls this state incoherence. It drains your physical battery and clouds your executive decision-making.

Coherence: The Ultimate Reset Button

The antidote to this exhaustion is a state called Coherence.

Coherence happens when your thoughts, emotions, and actions move in the exact same direction. It’s what happens when you stop saying one thing, feeling another, and doing something else entirely.

Think about how often we contradict ourselves throughout the workday:

  • Saying: "I have this completely under control."

  • Feeling: Crushing anxiety and self-doubt.

  • Doing: Frantically multi-tasking and snapping at a colleague.

That contradiction scrambles your internal signal. Achieving coherence allows your whole system to hum with a single, unified signal.

The beauty of this science is that once you are aware of it, you can use coherence as a tangible reset button. When anxiety, shame, or overwhelm show up, you don't have to just grit your teeth and push through. You can actively shift your physiology to stop the energy leak.

Creating a Gravitational Pull

When you regulate your nervous system and bring your mind and body into alignment, something fascinating happens: you create a gravitational pull toward what you want more of.

You don't get what you want by white-knuckling your way to the finish line; you get it by training your nervous system to match the sensation of the desired outcome.

  • Want to create abundance? Practice generosity. Be generous with your money, your time, and your energy. Train your nervous system to feel the sensations of having enough.

  • Want to cultivate worthiness? Practice receiving. Allow yourself to accept a compliment, take up space, or rest without feeling guilty. Train your nervous system to the sensation that you are entirely deserving of good things just for being, not just for doing.

You have to become the signal first.

The Power is in the Return

If you are an A-type who is used to striving for perfection, hear this: You will wobble. You will have days where the stress takes over and you fall out of alignment.

The power isn't in never falling; it's in how you return.

Resilience is simply the practice of noticing when your system feels "off," and knowing how to bring yourself back. You can start with incredibly small steps to ground yourself in the present moment and get your body back into alignment.

Try this Heart-Focused Breathing exercise today:

  1. Pause: Step away from your inbox or your to-do list for just two minutes.

  2. Focus: Shift your physical attention to the area of your heart or the center of your chest.

  3. Breathe: Imagine your breath flowing in and out of your heart area. Breathe a little slower and a little deeper than you normally would (try inhaling for 5 seconds, and exhaling for 5 seconds).

Do this until you feel your nervous system settle. You are no longer "doing." You are simply being. And in that space, you reclaim your power.
